Repurposed Picnic Table

When a family heirloom stopped being functional I helped create something new to share its legacy with future generations.

A family had a picnic table and bench that had been built by the wife’s grandfather in the eighties. The table was a focal point of community for their family and she had rich memories of sitting with her grandparents talking and cleaning vegetables for dinner.   After her Grandfather passed the table was given to her and spent more years as a place to build memories with her children. Recently one of the benches broke and they wanted to reuse some of the wood in a way to honor and preserve the memory of her grandparents.

After receiving the bench, disassembling, and replaning I found some beautiful cedar.  It was a gift to be included in their family story and help create some new items built upon the legacy of the old.

Here’s a little glimpse into the family’s reaction:

“I was so blessed by Brian’s eagerness to turn my vision into a reality. I had him make a cross for me, a cross to gift to my dad, and a cross to adorn my church’s communion table. In addition, Brian made me a custom nativity set out of the same wood, a further celebration of Immanuel, God with us. When I picked up the items, he had a surprise for me as well — a miniature replica of the table and benches, even painted the same red hue that my grandpa used all those decades ago.”
